    Español y Castellano, ¿Hablamos la Misma Lengua?

    A pesar de encontrarnos en el siglo XXI y de que el español haya existido durante siglos, aún hoy sigue existiendo el debate que gira en torno a la denominación del idioma.

    ¿El castellano es una lengua? ¿Son sinónimas las denominaciones de español y castellano? ¿Decimos español castellano o castellano español?

    Son muchas las dudas que nos rondan por la cabeza a la hora de ponerle etiqueta a esta lengua. Hoy, en iScribo, te contamos algunas curiosidades sobre este debate y te aclaramos tus dudas.

    El español en el mundo y su denominación

    Ya hemos hablado en otras ocasiones de los países en los que se habla el español y de las infinitas variedades que existen no solo entre países, sino también entre regiones. Al fin y al cabo, más de 580 millones de personas lo hablan aunque no sea su lengua materna.

    En cuanto a cómo llamar el idioma, la RAE es clara: español y castellano son la misma lengua, dependerá de la preferencia del interlocutor para designar el idioma. Por tanto, podemos decirte que sí, que el castellano es una lengua, pero que es la misma que el español.

    ¿Por qué tanta polémica?

    La verdad es que se trata más bien de un tema político o simplemente geográfico. La misma Constitución española, bastante antigua hemos de decir, denomina al idioma como castellano, cosa que el mismísimo premio Nobel, el escritor Camilo José Cela, critica cada vez que tiene la oportunidad.

    La RAE nos dice que hablar de español evita ambigüedad, ya que el castellano era el término que se usaba en el Reino de Castilla allá por la Edad Media. Hoy en día, sería más preferible usar castellano para referirnos al habla de las regiones españolas de Castilla.

    En Latinoamérica, por regla general, prefieren llamar español a lo que se habla en el Nuevo Continente y castellano a lo que se habla en el Viejo. Un dato más, en Argentina, la Academia Argentina de Letras recomienda el uso de español como denominación del idioma, a pesar de que entre la población se suela decir castellano. Países como Paraguay, Bolivia o Venezuela se encuentran en una situación muy parecida.

    Otras personas en España dirán que prefieren designar el idioma como castellano ya que es la lengua común en los territorios en los que hay más de un idioma oficial, es decir, gallego, vasco o catalán.

    ¿Sabéis? Cuando era pequeña y estudiaba en el colegio hablábamos de Lengua Castellana y Literatura. Es más, no recuerdo haber estudiado obras literarias latinoamericanas hasta la adolescencia, cuando la asignatura se llamaba Lengua Española.

    También recuerdo que era muy común hablar de castellano español o de español castellano. Menos mal que la RAE decidió acabar con esta controversia.

    No todos los debates son aburridos

    Nos hemos acostumbrado a que este debate sea aburrido en los círculos políticos o incluso intelectuales, pero la polémica ha ido más allá en algunas ocasiones.

    No nos vayamos muy lejos, en 2021, en la gala de los Óscar, interpretaron varias artistas la canción Into the Unknown de la mítica película infantil Frozen 2. Desde la organización tuvieron la genial idea de reunir a todas las cantantes que habían puesto voz a Elsa en esta canción y que cantaran cada una de ellas una estrofa. ¡Qué sorpresa nos llevamos cuando identificaron a Carmen Sarahí, de México, como cantante en español y a Gisela, de España, como cantante en castellano!Muy probablemente, la persona que organizó la actuación no hablaba español, si no habría sabido que las dos chicas cantaban en la misma lengua.

    De todas formas, ¿para qué liarnos? Muchas otras lenguas lo llaman español: Spanish, spagnolo, spanjisht, hiszpański, spanska, etcétera.La lista es interminable.

    Sea como sea, ya uses español y castellano o solo uno de los dos términos, todo el mundo va a saber, o debería saber, a qué idioma te refieres.     Castilian vs Spanish: Are They The Same Language?

    Despite the fact that we are in the 21st century and that Spanish has existed for centuries, even today there is still a debate that revolves around the naming of the language.

    Is Castilian a language, are the terms Spanish and Castilian synonymous, do we say Castilian Spanish?

    There are many doubts that come to our minds when it comes to labeling this language. Today, at iScribo, we tell you some curiosities about this debate and clarify your doubts.

    Spanish in Spain and around the world

    We have already talked on other occasions about the countries in which Spanish is spoken and the infinite varieties that exist not only between countries but also within regions. After all, more than 580 million people speak it even if it is not their mother tongue.

    As for what to call the language, the Spanish RAE is clear — Spanish and Castilian are the same language, it depends on the speaker to designate the way they call it. Therefore, we can tell you that yes, Castilian is a language, but it is the same as Spanish.

    Why such controversy?

    The truth is that it is more of a political or simply geographical matter. The Spanish Constitution itself, quite old we must say, calls the language Castilian, something that the Nobel Prize winner himself, the writer Camilo José Cela, criticises every time he has the chance.

    The RAE tells us that calling the language Spanish avoids ambiguity since Castilian was the term used in the Kingdom of Castile back in the Middle Ages. Today, it would be preferable to use Castilian to refer to the speech of the Spanish regions of Castile.

    In Latin America, generally, they prefer to call what is spoken in the New Continent Spanish and what is spoken in the Old Continent Castilian. For example, in Argentina, the Argentine Academy of Letters recommends the use of Spanish as the name of the language, even though among the population it is often referred to as Castilian. Countries such as Paraguay, Bolivia, and Venezuela are in a very similar situation.

    Other people in Spain will say that they prefer to designate the language as Castilian as the common language in territories where there is more than one official language, i.e., Galician, Basque, or Catalan.

    I’ll tell you more. When I was a kid and I studied at school we talked about Lengua Castellana y Literatura (Castilian Language and Literature). What’s more, I don’t remember studying Latin American literary works until I was a teenager, when the subject was called Lengua Española (Spanish Language).

    I also remember that it was very common to talk about Castilian Spanish what we talked in Spain. Fortunately, the RAE decided to put an end to this controversy.

    Not all discussions are boring

    We are used to this debate being boring in political or even intellectual circles, but the controversy has gone beyond that on some occasions.

    Let’s not go too far, in 2021, at the Oscars gala, several artists performed the song Into the Unknown from the mythical children’s movie Frozen 2. The organisers had the brilliant idea of bringing together all the singers who had voiced Elsa in this song and had each of them sing a verse. What a surprise when they identified Carmen Sarahí, from Mexico, as a singer in Spanish and Gisela, from Spain, as a singer in Castilian! Most likely, the person who organised the performance did not speak Spanish, otherwise, they would have known that the two women were singing in the same language.

    Anyway, why bother? Many other languages call it Spanish: spagnolo, spanjisht, hiszpański, spanska, and so on. The list is endless.

    Either way, whether you use Spanish and Castilian or just one of the two terms, everyone is going to know, ­or should know, which language you are referring to. Spanish is very diverse, so we should take the opportunity to expand the frontiers of the language and get to know the more variants the better.
